Genetic counseling is a wonderful resource when navigating the confusing and overwhelming world of carrier and prenatal genetic screening. Genetic counselors are non-directive healthcare professionals that help you understand your options.
A genetic counselor will likely be more familiar with testing guidelines and procedures than your primary doctor or Obstetrician. He/She is your point person throughout the process to help you understand the tests and what the results mean for you, your children and extended family.
Depending on your health insurance, you may need a referral before visiting a genetic counselor in order to have the expense covered, or you may be able to go directly to a genetic counselor in your network to discuss screening.
