The NTSAD International Tay-Sachs Carrier Testing Quality Control Program promotes accuracy of enzyme assay carrier testing using serum and leukocyte. Enzyme assay determines the level of Hex A activity in the blood. This method opposed to DNA analysis is preferred because it will detect any of the over 100 identified and unidentified mutations in the Tay-Sachs gene. Serum is recommended for all carrier screens except women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills and all individuals taking insulin to screen carriers of the Tay-Sachs gene, in which cases leukocyte is more accurate.

Please note: these are the medical labs participating in the NTSAD International Laboratory Quality Control Carrier Testing Tay-Sachs Program. It does not include collection centers, for information on collection centers in your area please contact the national office: 800.906.8723 or Info@ntsad.org.
